Coupé Fiat - 1996

In the middle of 1996 the Lampredi engine was replaced with the modern 1.8 litre engine of the Barchetta with 131 bhp.
Though the four cylinder equipped with a camshaft timing variator at the inlet camshaft performs 8 bhp less, acceleration and top speed remain nearly the same.

A new developed five cylinder with 147 bhp (later on 154 bhp) was put on sale as a 20V at the end of 1997. The engine also was used in the Bravo HGT, Marea and Lancia Kappa saloon (here with 145 bhp, later on 155 bhp) and installed at the new engine factory at Pratola Serra.

The new top model, the 20VT, was equipped with a Garret forced induction. The figures speak for themselves: 220 PS, 6.5 seconds in 0-100 km/h (65mph), top speed 250 km/h (155mph). As the fastest Fiat of all time the new 20V Turbo enters the company history. At the same time the 20VT is also the very reasonable possibility of becoming member in the 250 km/h-club.
The engine of the 20VT was also mounted in the Lancia Kappa in all body variations as well as in the Lancia Thesis (in a reduced to 185 bhp "softturbo" version). [Pictures]

In addition, the models receive a slight facelift in the end of 96. The most important changes are: new central console with analogue display watch, new door inner lining, new handle bars at the B-pillar, radiator grill with rib design, third stop light as well as new car body- and leather colours (grey, sand and plain leather).
Exit courtesy lights beneath the doors are no longer installed.
The "Plus"-configuration was dropped. With the 16V even leather rimmed steering wheel and gear knob as well as rear screen wiper rank among extras.
